About Cord Calc

Cord Calc is an independent calculator for people who heat with wood. It estimates cords per winter from NOAA climate normals and federal survey data, quotes heat per cord from university extension tables and stove ratings from the makers, and links every figure to its source and the date it was checked.

How the site works

Wood heat per cord comes from two university extension tables (Utah State and Kentucky), climate from NOAA's statewide heating degree days, house heat use from the federal Residential Energy Consumption Survey, and stove ratings from each maker's product page. Cord prices appear only where a state energy office publishes a dated one. The methodology page lists every source, the date it was read and the formulas. Cord Calc has no affiliate links and does not sell stoves, firewood or chimney services.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong or a source has changed, email hello@cordcalc.com with the page and a link. Corrections go into the data file and the check date updates with the next build.
